Twitter could look way different soon

Since the beginning, Twitter has always been defined by short, 140 character messages and not a single letter longer. The 140 character limit is what defines a tweet; it’s sacred. At least we thought so.

In August, the social media behemoth took away the 140 character limit for direct messages. Since then, you can use up to 10,000 characters in a personal note to a friend or Twitter follower. So the company’s looking at more changes. Now there are rumors Twitter could end the 140 character limit for regular tweets.

Twitter’s interim CEO, Jack Dorsey – rumored to soon be permanently in the chief executive’s suite – is determined to shake things up and expand Twitter’s user base, according to media reports.

“People have been very precious at Twitter about what Twitter can be and how much it can be evolved,” a senior employee told Re/code. “Having Jack come in and say it’s OK makes all the difference in the world.”

There’s no guarantee Twitter will get rid of the 140 character limit, but it seems to be a distinct possibility. How do you feel about this, Twitter users? Would breaking the 140 character limit fundamentally alter what a tweet is, or would you welcome the change? Let us know in the comments below.
