No looking back: Pinterest’s top 100 trends will keep you ahead of the pack

Instead of focussing on the highs and (cavernous) lows of 2016, Pinterest is keeping things optimistic as ever with its top trends to try in 2017.

The third annual Pinterest 100 is broken down into 10 categories, including food, men’s and women’s style, travel, and personal interests, among others. The list was compiled by the company’s insights team, which was assigned the task of pouring through the platform’s 75 billion pins to glean what its lifestyle-savvy pinners were looking forward to in the new year.

Without further ado, here’s a snapshot of some of the biggest trends from the web’s catalog of ideas. First up, when it comes to food, there’s a trendy new meat substitute known as the jackfruit that’s seen a whopping 420 percent surge online of late. Native to parts of South and Southeast Asia, the jackfruit is a large fruit that is part of the Moracaea family that also includes figs and mulberries.

In the same category, the sous-vide method of cooking (which sees food placed in an air-tight container and cooked at a low temperature for a long duration) received a 191 percent boost on Pinterest. There’s also been a 175 percent rise in the glorious food mashup that is the “naan pizza.”

In terms of style, men will embrace the dark side of athleisure by donning goth-inspired streetwear. Pinterest describes the fashion trend as an urban style containing “hints of Kanye” and individual items such as sneakers, joggers, anoraks and caps in blacks, whites and greys. On the other hand, women will be adopting pins and patches as an easy way to customize their outfits — the embellishment trend itself was up 800 percent this year.

Elsewhere, in regards to travel destinations, Pinterest predicts people will be ditching the beach to chill out in the snow. From ski retreats to cabin getaways, travelers are choosing cold getaways (up 300 percent) over sandy holidays (down 10 percent).

A Pinterest spokesperson told Digital Trends the following about the results: “As the majority of pinners look for seasonal ideas nearly twice as early as expected — and because people come to Pinterest with high intent — we can spot both emerging and seasonal trends and match you with ideas like a new recipe, product or outfit to try while you’re open to trying those things.”
