Facebook is rolling out PayPal payments and notifications for Messenger

Facebook and PayPal are joining forces to integrate the online payments system with Messenger as part of the messaging platform’s increasing focus on mobile commerce.

PayPal payments are currently limited to select users on Messenger, but will soon start to roll out to the entirety of the platform’s 1 billion-strong user base.

As a result, consumers will be able to link a PayPal account to Facebook and Messenger at PayPal checkout. The payment company’s chief operating officer, Bill Ready, confirmed that as Messenger starts to roll out native payments, PayPal account holders will be able to make purchases directly from Messenger bots.

PayPal users in the United States will also have the option to receive notifications in Messenger, making it easier to manage transaction receipts in one place. These alerts will include info such as your order confirmation, shipping address, and total payment made. Facebook merchants, too, will be able to capitalize on the enhanced integration, which will give them access to PayPal’s global user base of 192 million users.

This isn’t the first time PayPal has partnered with Facebook in regards to ecommerce. In December, the company processed payments relating to Uber rides ordered through Messenger. Additionally, it has helped PayPal-enabled merchants to sell products from the Shop section within Facebook Pages.

“These new capabilities deepen our partnership with Facebook,” said Ready. “PayPal’s mobile-optimized experience, when combined with relevant, in-context commerce experiences, will help offer a compelling and frictionless commerce experience.”

Before taking the dive into mobile commerce in September — with the rollout of payment features on Messenger — Facebook hinted at its eretail ambeitions by hiring former PayPal VP David Marcus to head its messaging platform. At last count, there were 30,000 bots on Messenger, up from 11,000 in July.
